The wonderful people over at Sony Mobile SA contacted me early in February to see if I’d be interested in doing a

review of one of their devices, the Sony Xperia XZ1 with ground-breaking technology that offers 3D scanning.

Yes you heard correct, 3D scanning.

Of course I jumped at the opportunity and mentioned that I was attending ULTRA MUSIC FESTIVAL

on the weekend, so I’d give it a go then.

Sony then quickly responded and said they changed their minds, they wanted to rather give me their flagship

device the Sony Xperia XZ Premium, voted the world’s best new smartphone at the

Mobile World Congress in 2017.

Now I was even more excited because this device not only has a 19mp Motion Eye camera but can record in 4K

with the world’s first mobile device that has a 4K HDR Display.

Also this device is the first mobile device which has super slow motion capabilities

and can record at 960 frames per second.

I was lucky enough to be able to play around on the phone for an entire month and not the 2 weeks

as originally agreed upon.

This meant that I actually became quite attached to the device as it was super fast, responsive,

and easy to use in my everyday work environment.

I was rather sad when I had to give the device back because it makes my Samsung A3,

feel like a Nokia 3310 in comparison.

Phone Specs:

Single SIM, Dual SIM, Nano SIM

4GB RAM, 64GB (Single SIM)/64GB (Dual SIM) UFS internal memory

191 gm

156 x 77 x 7.9 mm

5.5” 4K HDR Display, TRILUMINOS™ Display for mobile, X-Reality™ for mobile,

Dynamic Contrast Enhancer, sRGB 138%

19MP Motion Eye Camera, 1/2.3” Exmor RS™ for mobile memory stacked sensor,

960 fps Super slow motion videos, Predictive Capture, Anti-distortion shutter,

Triple image sensing technology

Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 835 processor

What I liked most about this device?

I liked the slim, light finish.

The fact that I could connect it to my Playstation

The Camera with 8x zoom and low light abilities

Gaming capabilities which I installed

“Hearthstone” “Sniper Strike” “Pro Evo” Ire: Blood Memory and plenty other apps which even then,

the phone ran smoothly all the time.

Onboard Memory was big enough that I didn’t need an external memory card

Fast charging that took 45 min for a full charge and battery care system which is technology that your phone learns

your charging habits and charges accordingly, ensuring the battery is looked after.

Battery Life would last a full work day but I did have to charge it by 5pm.

4K HDR Display was amazing, making every viewing experience just that, an Experience.

What I disliked about this device?

It was so smooth that without a case or protective cover on, the device would slip and slide along every surface

Fingerprints left all over the device after every use

Too big for my one hand so had to use both hands all the time

Not the best video recording quality in Slow Motion as seen below and didn’t like what it did with the sound during

slow motion playback.

Overall Rating:

This has been without a doubt the best mobile device I have ever used and highly recommend it,

to anyone looking for a new device.

That being said, if you have extra money to spend then I recommend you go for the new Sony Xperia XZ2

or Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact launched in March this year.
