The first and second place in the only industry competition for Slots Hosts – the Tsogo Sun Slots Host Championship – have been scooped by Montecasino employees, firmly reinforcing Gauteng’s premier entertainment destination’s position as the casino with the most skilled and service- orientated slots staff in the country. Tsogo Sun’s third annual Slots Host Championship, which took place in early August at The Ballroom in Montecasino, was the scene of hotly contested competition when 18 Slots Hosts from the group’s 14 casinos went head to head in the hopes of becoming the top Slots Host.

After an intense selection process that included unit finals, a semi-final and group grand finale, Montecasino’s Thato Mokete (who resides in Cosmo City) was crowned the first place winner, taking home R10 000 in prize money, with Julian Maduna (who resides in Fourways) from Montecasino coming in a close second and bagging R5 000 in prize money. Third prize and R3 000 was won by Collen Makhubela from Silverstar Casino.

The Slots Host Championship was created to give Tsogo Sun Slots Hosts across the country the opportunity to showcase their job skills, knowledge and thought processes, while building a healthy spirit of competition between the Tsogo Sun units. Slots Hosts are judged in four categories, namely customer service, dispute resolution, technical skills and the livingTSOGO values.

“As the employer of choice in the gaming industry, slots positions within Tsogo Sun are highly sought after and the group attracts the highest calibre of staff within the industry. Only the best of the best are chosen to represent their properties in the final of the Slots Host Championship, and making it into the top two is a significant achievement, not just within the context of Tsogo Sun but throughout the industry. We are exceptionally proud of our two Montecasino staff members,” says Glenn Joseph, General Manager of Montecasino.

Says Steve Hight, Director of Gaming for Tsogo Sun, “The standards of this year’s competition were very high, making every finalist a champion. Thato is a deserving winner and we congratulate him and the Montecasino team on this accomplishment. It’s gratifying to see how much talent the Tsogo Sun group holds, and to meet the potential leaders of the future. We would also like to thank our industry sponsor, Aruze Gaming, especially Riaan Swart and Jan Snyman. Their unwavering support and sponsorship of gifts, golf shirts and goody bags is much appreciated. They have walked the extra mile with us, and also sponsored the grand prize of a Harmon Kardon bluetooth sound player for the best dressed male and female at our gala evening”. Thato, who has been employed as a Slots Host at Montecasino for three years, says, “I’ve never been so excited in a job before, and I look forward to waking up every morning to work at Gauteng’s premier entertainment destination”.

The Slots Host Championship has become a much-anticipated event that brings a healthy spirit of competition within Tsogo Sun, a group that proudly encompasses 14 casinos and over 90 hotels in South Africa, Africa, Abu Dhabi and the Seychelles.
