LUCY KRUGER AND THE LOST BOYS
It has been close to two years since the release of Lucy’s debut album and her emergence on the South African music scene. The growth in these two years, due to relentless touring and collaborations with various artists, has resulted in a new avenue for the 25 year old – one of colourful soundscapes, dreamy melodies and primal rhythms, while still staying true to her roots of acoustic folk and her honest way with words.
The makings of her band, The Lost Boys, started when Lucas Swart & Andre Leo joined on guitar for stripped down performances at the 2013 National Arts Festival, where they were awarded a Standard Bank Ovation Award. They returned this year to do a run of shows on the arena program. Soon after, they were joined by Werner Von Waltsleben on drums and Calvin Siderfin on bass, allowing for a fuller and more vibrant sound. The musicians have given Lucy the space to further explore what music can sound and feel like. It brings a greater subtlety and a greater violence to the songs.
The EP ‘Lucy Kruger & The Lost Boys’ was recorded live over three days in a house in Onrus. The idea was to keep the sound as honest and authentic as possible – a group of friends coming together to create something special. The album has been made available for free online with the hope that listeners will experience it and share it:

Medicine Boy is the spirit animal of Lucy Kruger & Andre Leo. The duo’s soothing yet tense sound is created by vocal harmonies, pained feedback and the drone of an electric organ sailing along the minimal heartbeat of a drum machine.
Influences range from the untouchable might of The Jesus & Mary Chain to later-era noise makes, The Raveonettes. The band has been decribed as “the Kills’ and the XX’s angry little sister” (The Beeld newspaper).
