LET’S GET PERSONAL WITH AKING
About 3 weeks ago I received an email from a publicist named Jeni Fletcher asking if I would like to interview all the SA Support Acts who will be performing at ROCK ON THE LAWNS featuring the PIXIES this March.
I did not hesitate for more than two seconds and immediately replied yes, please.
So I thought that instead of asking each support act different questions that I would simply ask each act the same questions.
So without wasting any more time
HERE IS WHAT THE FIFTH SA SUPPORT ACT HAD TO SAY AHEAD OF THEIR PERFORMANCE AT ROCK ON THE LAWNS featuring the PIXIES
LET’S GET PERSONAL WITH HENNIE VAN HALEN OF AKING
What are your thoughts about being selected as one of the support acts to open for The Pixies at ROCK ON THE LAWNS this March?
It’s a massive honour having been included in the lineup to open for them.
As one of the bands that inspired our heroes and ourselves, they are the kind of band you’d have on your bucket list to see live.
Never mind sharing a stage with!
- What has been your best moment or moments on stage?
I’d have to say opening for Mango Groove in Pretoria was right up there on my list of greatest moments.
The atmosphere on the day was electrifying and everything just fell into place to make the day one to remember.
- What has been your worst moment or moments on stage?
Being a Debby Downer isn’t really my thing,
so I’ll just say that taking the bad with the good is what keeps you sane in this industry.
- Do you have any kind of lucky charm that you take with you on tour?
We have collected a few tour mascots over the years.
From a fake grass dashboard cover for the tour van,
to a purple hand puppet that served as our mental road manager.
The best lucky charm though remains an ice cold Tequila a few minutes before the show.
- Do you perform any special ritual before going on stage?
- Which superhero would you be and why?
We’re four guys in the band so I guess we could share roles.
Ice Man, to keep the drinks cold,
Human Torch to keep the braai fires going,
Tony Starke to invent solutions to problem we encounter on the road &
Deadpool because he’s got a wicked sense of humour.
- Name any 3 people that you’d Marry, Shag and throw off a cliff
I would marry the Pope, just to prove that it could be done.
I’d shag my girlfriend if I had one.
I would throw Jeb Corliss off of a cliff because he’s probably used to it by now.
- What inspires your music?
This is hard to describe because we all draw on a lot of different things for inspiration.
But I would say as with most songwriters, the best material comes from personal experience.
Everyday life throws enough at you to fill an anthology of songs.
- Imagine if you had just won 100 Million Rand, bought 6 cars, 1 jet plane, 4 houses across the world. What would you have for breakfast?
There is only one breakfast, Eggs Benedict with Smoked Salmon.
If the previous night went well, I’d include a Mimosa on the side.
- What can fans look forward to in 2017?
We’re busy writing new material so a new single and a new album can be expected.
When they’ll be available I can’t say at the moment.
So there you have it, folks, some quick questions answered by
