Johnny Clegg Joburg shows Oct & Nov
Johnny Clegg recently undertook an extensive 9 week tour of USA and Canada, performing 42 shows in 67 nights and travelling 27,000 kms on a tour bus.
Standard Bank Joy of Jazz honoured Juluka with an award on Saturday 6th September in recognition of the contributions Juluka made as musicians.
On 28th August, Minister of Arts and Culture Mr. Nathi Mthethwa Honoured Johnny Clegg with an award for the contribution he made in the South African Music Industry, as a Musician.
Following on from the success of the JOHNNY CLEGG BEST, LIVE AND UNPLUGGED Eastern Cape tour (10 sold out shows in 10 days) and the sold out Baxter Theatre shows from last year, Johnny will be bringing this show to the Mandela Theatre at The Joburg Theatre from 23 to 26th October. The Joburg audiences will see Johnny performing with longtime friend and ex-Juluka partner, Sipho Mchunu.
This is an intimate show which includes storytelling by Johnny Clegg, where he talks about the events in his life and political history of South Africa and the world at that time that motivated him to write that song. It is a personal journey, which is uplifting, moving and also humorous at times.
Luvuyo Mncanca (Whats on in Cape Town) reported on the Baxter Theatre shows: “This was simply one of the best live performances I have ever seen. Johnny Clegg, surely one of South Africa’s most versatile and prolific performers, has returned to the Baxter Theatre after 10 years for a series of special performances which will end on the 22 of September. And he returns with a bang; giving the electrifying performance that is distinctive of this icon. Having seen some of his previous shows including his performance at the Kirstenbosch Summer concert series earlier this year, I was curious to find out how this unplugged show would live up to the ‘Intimate Evening’ promised in the title .Sure enough, this proved to be a rare opportunity to come up-close and personal with this consummate storyteller, passionate dancer and a superbly gifted singer and performer. This intimate unplugged show is memorable and poignant yet fun and fascinating. I left feeling I’d experienced this prolific artist in more ways than just as a fantastic musician and performer. I have a new and higher level of appreciation for this music legend, for this humanitarian who cares deeply about people and the environment, for this deeply spiritual and an eloquent speaker and fascinating storyteller. This was simply one of the best live performances I have ever seen.”
Johnny will also be performing with his full band at the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens on Sunday 30th November. Public are welcome to bring their picnic blankest and baskets and enjoy a sunset concert with Johnny at this amazing outdoor venue. Gates open at 3pm and the concert begins at 5pm.
