Characteristically colourful Carnival City is turning green. The complex has implemented a number of changes to its operations to reduce its carbon footprint and environmental impact, and is making sound progress in its efforts to improve the eco-friendliness resources and energy efficiency of its business.
“Carnival City takes to heart its obligation to reduce the impact of our operations on the environment and to use resources and electricity efficiently. We are very proud of the achievements we have made in this regard in recent years. It is also pleasing to see the willingness of our employees to support our endeavours to go adopt ‘greener’ working practices,” says Michelle Smith, the Marketing Manager at Carnival City.
According to Smith, the casino has implemented a number of programmes to support its green goals. For instance, its Three Rs (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) initiative serves to manage waste generated in the complex. The aim is to minimize the amount of waste send to the landfill, reduce pollution and protect the environment.
Wet waste from the kitchens, grass cuttings and leaves from the gardens, and sawdust from the Maintenance Carpentry Workshop are used to generate compost. Composting is an excellent way to reclaim some value from what would be considered as waste products.
Dry waste such as cans, glass, and are sorted on site by the external service provider, Interwaste On-site Solutions, before being sent away for recycling.
“Reduce, re-use and recycling conserves and promotes sustainable use of resources. Everyone has a responsibility, protect our health, safety and the environment in which we work and live in. Every action counts and together our actions add up,” says Smith.
To improve water management and the complex’s demand for water from the municipality, 14 rain sensors have been installed at Carnival City. These sensors help to save water as they isolate the irrigation sprinklers when it’s raining. What this means is that they interupt any automatic irrigation cycles scheduled after enough rain has occurred, resulting in huge water savings. This not only saves money but also ensures that the plants are not over watered and increases the lifespan of the complex irrigation system.
From an electricity saving perspective, various measures have been deployed at the complex to optimize energy efficiency. This includes the installation of heat pumps to minimize the amount of energy used for heating at cooling at the complex and help control heating and cooling costs. Heat pumps are capable of heating and cooling, and have the reverse effect of a normal fridge. They use small amount of energy to move heat from one location to another. Traditional boilers which operate with elements are converted into storage vessels for the hot water generated by the heat pumps.
The heating side is used to heat up the water and the building during cold weather. The pumps function as an air conditioner and provide cool air during warmer conditions saving a lot of electricity. Carnival City Casino has saved more than R3-million in value over three years since the heat pumps were installed in 2012. Electric heat pumps are environmentally friendly and improve air quality. They reduce the company’s carbon emissions as they don’t use combustible materials.
Carnival City has also gone lighter on lighting. LEDs have been installed for street lighting, downlighting inside the complex, and to light-up billboards. LED lights use less energy and minimize environmental impacts as they don’t emit much heat or contain poisonous materials like mercury.
Recognising that its employees have a fundamental role to play in ensuring the success and sustainability of its resource efficiency initiatives, the casino also runsawareness programmes to educate them about saving electricity, conserving water and other issues around environmental responsibility. Wherever possible, the casino uses environmentally-friendly materials and chemicals, and it has adopted strict measures for the disposal of hazardous materials.
“We are making progress towards our green goals. These are just some of the measures we have put into place to help improve our environmental standpoint. We believe that there is still a lot more that we can do and we are committed to continuous improvement,” concludes Smith.
