South African small enterprise launches the drink to drink if you don’t
A relatively unknown small local enterprise, Breva Beverages Co, has launched an alcohol free malt beverage, BREVA, to become the first South African company to manufacture and bottle a malt beverage of this nature in the country. In an increasingly growing non-alcoholic malt sector led by
international alcohol companies offering beer alternative products, BREVA Beverages Co, has broken with tradition by offering a malt-based drink for non-drinkers.
Containing neither hops nor fermented barley malt, BREVA taps into a glamorous image and globalized lifestyle that neither juice, teas nor colas can offer.
“We have a huge emerging middle class in South Africa that does not drink alcohol. About 65% of adult South Africans have never consumed alcohol for various reasons, including religious reasons.
It is estimated that over 80% of South Africans belong to a religious grouping of sorts many of which frown upon the consumption of alcohol. Because of their disposable income they seek a drink that they can drink comfortably as adults when they are out and about and when they are at home – a drink that talks to their image and that they can use to badge,” says Gladys Mawoneke, the founder and Managing Director of BREVA Beverages Co, “This is where BREVA comes in,” she adds.
Manufactured and bottled in Wellington, Cape Town, BREVA is packaged in a stylish, green flint bottle with a twist-off crown closure. It comes in four flavours that blend well with malt – passion fruit, apple, peach and pineapple.
BREVA is made from non-fermented malt and the product does not undergo any fermentation process. While it competes with non-alcohol brands, BREVA is alcohol free in that there is no possibility of the product containing 0.05% alcohol. BREVA is targeted primarily at the 18-34 urban metro professionals falling in LSM 7-10, male and female who seek an alcohol free lifestyle or who drink occasionally and, at a secondary level, at alcohol drinkers seeking a pacer drink. The brand is said to be purposefully bold, designed to complement what it stands for: indulgence without recklessness. Its iconography – SA’s regal blue crane – is a symbol of the pride BREVA takes in rewarding individuals for their smart decisions and their courage to choose to live their values, while at the same time positioning them as cool and trendy achievers who understand and deserve quality.
After just a few short months on the SA market, the brand has much about which to boast. Along with recently being made available at select Tsogo Sun 4 and 5 star hotels, BREVA was an official beverage supplier to the South African Fashion Week (SAFW) Spring/Summer Collections showcase,
which took place in Johannesburg in March. BREVA is available at Pick n Pay, Shoprite and Checkers Liquor outlets in the Western Cape province, select Spur outlets in the Western Cape and independent restaurants and grocery outlets.
